1. Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution. 2. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses. 3. The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.

O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. (Quran 4:19)



And one of His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves so that you may find comfort in them. And He has placed between you compassion and mercy. Surely in this are signs for people who reflect. (Quran 30:21)



Therefore the mishna taught: The woman is acquired, from which it may be inferred that with her consent, yes, he can acquire her as a wife, but when he acts without her consent, no, she is not betrothed to him. (Kiddushin 2b:5)



They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together. Rather they alone are called husband and wife, who have one soul in two bodies. (Sri Guru Granth Sahib p.788)



To cherish one’s children and spouse is the greatest blessing. (Sutta Nipāta, 261)
