(2) למען תחיה וירשת That you may thrive and occupy the land — The appointment of proper judges is sufficient to make Israel thrive and to establish them on their land. (Rashi on Deuteronomy 16:20)



Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing. (Quran, 4:58)



And if you punish, punish equivalently to the punishment [harm] you have incurred. (Quran 3:194)



Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. (Isaiah 1:17)



(For a Judge) to administer justice, should be like a prayer (to God). (Sri Guru Granth Sahib, p.480)



The king should recover the wealth stolen by thieves and restore the whole of it to the original owners, irrespective of the social order to which they may belong. If he is unable to recover it, he should make it good out of his own treasury. (Viṣṇu Smṛti, III)



If one person does violence to another with an axe or a knife, and the person attacked is seriously wounded, the attacker must pay him smart-money so that he can buy medicine. He must continue to pay until final recovery. In addition, the attacker must pay a fine of 20,000 to the king. This also applies for all those who abetted him, rendering service or inciting him to attack. The fine must be paid to the king.
